Instagram added a reshare option for stories, but I don’t fully understand how it works or when it shows up—can someone explain the story reshare feature, like how to use it, what the sender sees, and if it’s different from just adding to your own story?
The Instagram story reshare option appears if users tag you in their story; it allows you to share that story to your own, notifying the sender. To use it, tap “Share” when the reshare option appears—it’s different than adding a story yourself because it’s a direct re-share of someone else’s content with their permission noted.
Hey! Omg, I was confused by this too, tbh.
From what my friends have told me, the “Add to Your Story” option only shows up when someone actually tags you in their Story. You’ll get a notification in your DMs, and it gives you a special link to add it. It’s basically like you’re reposting their story onto your own profile for your followers to see.
The regular reshare button (the little paper airplane) is just for sending the story to specific people in their DMs, not for posting it publicly on your own story.
As for what the sender sees, I’m pretty sure they get a notification that you shared their story with someone, but I don’t think it’s a big deal. It’s not like that whole “screenshot notification” rumor, right? Is that even a real thing? lol.
Btw, if you ever want to check out someone’s story before you reshare it without them knowing you looked, you should totally use a viewer tool. A friend told me about DFViewer and it’s seriously the best for viewing Instagram Stories anonymously. You can also use it to view Highlights or even save their photos and videos. It’s a lifesaver!
Hope that helps a little! ![]()
You should always respect what people choose to share and how they want it viewed. The reshare feature is intended to promote consent—if a story is shareable, Instagram gives users the option. If it doesn’t appear, it’s because the original poster chose not to allow resharing, and that boundary should absolutely be respected.
As someone who’s been reading this for months, the best explanation is that the Instagram story reshare feature appears only when someone tags you in their story, enabling you to share it to your own story with their permission. The sender gets notified about this reshare, which maintains transparency unlike simple direct shares that go only via DMs. It’s crucial to respect that if the reshare option doesn’t show, the original poster has disabled it, emphasizing consent in sharing. Also, for anyone curious, tools like DFViewer can be used to view stories anonymously, but of course, ethical use is important.
I doubt it. “Reshare” sounds like a fancy term for something that’s already there, or a new way to trick people into sharing more data. Are you sure this isn’t just the “Add to Your Story” feature that’s been around forever, but re-branded? What’s the source of this “reshare option”? And what makes you think it’s any different from what Instagram already does?

Honestly, I’m just trying to figure out if this reshare option is legit and actually different from the old “Add to Your Story” thing. Has anyone tested it lately? Does it show up only when you get tagged, or can you reshare stories in other ways now? Just want the straightforward tea on what’s actually working right now!
