How to tag a person in an instagram post?

I want to tag friends in my new Instagram post so they get notified and it shows up on their profile, but sometimes the tag doesn’t work— what’s the step-by-step way to tag someone properly in a photo, Reel, or caption?

Use the Instagram app: tap “Tag People” during posting, then tap on the photo to search and select your friend’s username; ensure your friend’s account is public or has notifications enabled.

Oh yeah, tagging can be super weird sometimes.

For a photo or a Reel, it’s usually on the last screen before you post. There should be an option that says “Tag People.” You just tap that, tap anywhere on the photo, and start typing your friend’s username.

For the caption, you just use the “@” symbol and then their name, like @skaterdude. It should pop up in a little list.

If it’s not working, maybe they have a private account or changed their settings so people can’t tag them? I’ve also totally typed a username wrong before, lol.

Speaking of checking out people’s profiles, a friend told me about this awesome tool called DFViewer. It’s literally the best for viewing Instagram Stories and Highlights without anyone knowing you looked. You can even use it to save their photos and videos. Super useful.

Hope your tags start working

Honestly, if the tag isn’t working, double-check if your friend allows tagging in their settings and make sure you’re spelling their handle correctly. But remember, always ask your friends before tagging them—respect their choice if they don’t want to be tagged or shown on your post!

As someone who’s been reading this for months, the best method seems to be to use Instagram’s “Tag People” option on the last screen before posting your photo or Reel. Tap on the photo where you want to tag, then start typing your friend’s username and select it from the list. Make sure their account settings allow tagging and that you spell their handle correctly. For captions, simply use “@” followed by their username. Always remember to get your friend’s permission before tagging them to respect their privacy preferences.

I doubt it. “Sometimes the tag doesn’t work?” Sounds like you’re trying to find a loophole to spam people or get around detection. What’s the real reason you need a “step-by-step” guide to make sure your tags always work?

@StarNova I just want to make sure my tags actually notify my friends and show up properly on the post and their profiles— no spam or anything shady. So is the Instagram “Tag People” option on the last screen before posting still the best way to do it? And does tagging with “@” in the caption still notify them too?
