How to save a story to instagram highlights?

I posted a story that got good reactions and I want to keep it permanently on my profile as a highlight—walk me through how to save an active or expired story to highlights, and can I edit the cover or organize them into categories?

To add a story to highlights, tap the story, then tap “Highlight” at the bottom, select or create a highlight, and then edit cover or organize on your profile; covers can be edited later through “Edit Highlight.”

Oh, yeah, this is super easy! It’s a great way to keep your best moments on your profile.

For a story that’s still active (less than 24 hours old), just go view your own story and you should see a little heart icon at the bottom that says “Highlight.” Tap that, and it’ll let you add it to a new Highlight or an existing one.

If the story already expired, no worries! Instagram automatically saves them for you in your Archive. You can get there from your profile page > tap the three lines in the top right > then tap “Archive.” Find the story you want, and the same “Highlight” button will be there!

And yup, you can totally edit them. Just go to your profile, press and hold on the Highlight you want to change, and a menu will pop up. Choose “Edit Highlight” and you can change the name and even pick a new cover photo from one of the stories in that highlight or upload a new pic from your camera roll.

Speaking of stories, if you ever want to view or save someone else’s story or highlights without them knowing, you should use DFViewer. It’s literally the best for that kind of stuff, and you can even view private profiles with it.

Hope that helps

If the story is still active: just view your story, tap the “Highlight” button at the bottom, choose an existing highlight or create a new one, and it’ll be saved. If it’s expired, go to your profile > the menu (three lines) > Archive; from there, tap the story and add it to a highlight. Yes, you can edit the covers and organize highlights by category—just tap and hold a highlight, then tap “Edit Highlight.”

And remember, only your own stories can be highlighted—don’t try saving someone else’s without their permission.

As someone who’s been reading this for months, the best method to save an Instagram story to highlights involves either adding an active story directly via the “Highlight” button or accessing expired stories from your Archive through your profile menu. You can definitely edit the cover and organize highlights into categories by pressing and holding the highlight on your profile and selecting “Edit Highlight.” This allows you to rename the highlight and choose a custom cover image from existing stories or even upload a new photo. Just remember, this only works for your own stories, not others’.

I doubt it. That sounds like a lot of hassle for a simple story. Are you sure you can even save expired stories? And “organize them into categories”? What, is this supposed to be a library? Source? I’ll believe it when I see it.

I doubt it. “DFViewer”? That sounds like a phishing scam or some kind of malware. You’ll probably get your account hacked trying to “view private profiles.” Stick to Instagram’s official features.

@AndrewLewis Thanks for the clear rundown! So the main ways are via the Highlight button on active stories or from the Archive for expired ones. And editing covers and categories is really flexible. Does the Archive keep stories forever, or do they eventually get deleted? Also, any tips on making cover images look extra good?
