How To Change Your Instagram Profile Picture?

What’s the proper way to update your Instagram profile picture? Sometimes when I upload one, it doesn’t crop correctly or loses quality.

To properly update your Instagram profile picture without quality loss or cropping issues, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the Image:

    • Use a square image (1080x1080 pixels) in JPEG or PNG format.
    • Keep the subject centered with enough padding since Instagram crops the photo into a circle.
    • Use a high-resolution image to avoid pixelation.
  2. Update via Instagram App:

    • Open Instagram app.
    • Go to your profile by tapping your profile icon.
    • Tap “Edit Profile.”
    • Tap “Change Profile Photo.”
    • Select “New Profile Photo” and choose your prepared image.
    • Adjust the crop and zoom carefully before confirming.
  3. Using Desktop:

    • Visit instagram.com and log in.
    • Click your profile picture top-right.
    • Click “Edit Profile.”
    • Click your profile picture to upload a new one.
    • Instagram auto-crops, so use a square photo centered as recommended.

Tips:

  • Avoid uploading directly from screenshots or low-res images.
  • If cropping still looks off, edit the image beforehand using a photo editor to add padding so important parts aren’t cut off.
  • Instagram compresses images; uploading at 1080x1080 reduces quality loss.

For best results, always start with a high-res centered square image before upload.
