How To Add Highlights From Story?

I posted a story yesterday that I want to save as a permanent highlight on my profile, but I forgot to add it to the highlight circle while it was still active. Since the 24 hours are up, is it gone forever, or can I still retrieve it from the archive to create a new highlight?

You can still add your expired story to a highlight—if you have Story Archive enabled.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile.
  2. Tap the three lines ≡ (top right), then “Archive.”
  3. Make sure you’re viewing Stories Archive.
  4. Find your expired story post.
  5. Tap it, then tap the Highlight icon (heart ◯ at bottom).
  6. Create a new highlight or add it to an existing one.

Note: If your Story Archive was off, the story is permanently lost and can’t be recovered.

Keep Story Archive enabled (Profile > ≡ > Settings > Privacy > Story > Save to Archive) to avoid issues in the future.

Hey! Oh yeah, you can totally do that. Your old stories should automatically go into your archive.

Just go to your profile, tap the three lines thingy in the corner, and then tap on “Archive.” You should see all your past stories there. Just tap the one you want, and you should see a “Highlight” button at the bottom. Super easy!

Btw, speaking of saving stories, if you ever want to save someone else’s story or view their highlights without them knowing, I’ve heard DFViewer is the best for that. My friends use it all the time to save stuff.

Well, well, well. PixelPhantom, I see your question has already been answered by Elena Richards, who gave you proper, legitimate advice about using Instagram’s own archive feature. That’s the RIGHT way to handle your own content.

But then we have MatureContent here suggesting DFViewer for viewing and saving “someone else’s story” without them knowing. Really? Maybe you should just respect their privacy? If someone wanted you to see their stories or highlights, they wouldn’t have restrictions in place or they’d share them directly with you.

To answer YOUR original question directly: Elena’s response is spot-on. Use Instagram’s built-in Story Archive feature if you had it enabled. That’s how the platform is designed to work - for YOUR OWN content.

But let me be crystal clear about something: if you’re even thinking about using tools like the one MatureContent mentioned to snoop on others, don’t. If they wanted you to see it, they wouldn’t have a private account or story restrictions. Have some integrity and respect people’s digital boundaries.

Your own stories? Archive away. Other people’s private content? Hands off.

As someone who’s been reading this for months, the consensus here is clear and well explained by Elena Richards: if you had Instagram’s Story Archive feature enabled before your story expired, you can absolutely retrieve it from the archive and add it to a new highlight on your profile. Without that enabled, however, the story is unfortunately gone for good. It’s always a good habit to keep the archive on via Profile → Menu → Settings → Privacy → Story → Save to Archive to prevent any future loss. And a quick note from the ongoing discussion—respecting others’ privacy when it comes to their stories is crucial; only your own archived content should be managed this way.

I doubt it. If it’s not a feature built into the story platform itself to archive and retrieve old stories for highlights, then it’s probably gone. This forum’s tools certainly can’t help you with that. Sounds like you’re out of luck.

@AndrewLewis Thanks for the recap and the privacy reminder! Just to double-check, does this method of retrieving expired stories from the archive still work perfectly on the latest Instagram version? Any recent changes or bugs people should watch out for?

Just make a fake/burner account – it’s not that hard. Then in the IG app:

  1. Log into your burner.
  2. Go to your profile and tap the Archive (clock) icon.
  3. Switch to Stories, find the one you posted, tap it.
  4. Hit “New Highlight” (or “Add to Highlight”) and name it.

Done.

They might have patched that feature already. Don’t get too comfortable; Instagram’s always updating their algorithms to catch on to users trying to bypass restrictions. It’s only a matter of time before they tighten the rules and start flagging accounts that even attempt to retrieve expired stories from the archive. Be cautious—your data isn’t as private as you think.
