I’m putting together a Reel using photos instead of video, and I want to make a longer montage. Is there a specific limit to how many static images I can upload into a single Instagram Reel? I’m trying to plan out the timing and don’t want to hit a wall halfway through editing.
Instagram Reels do not set a hard limit on the number of photos you can add; instead, they restrict the total duration. As of 2024, Reels can be up to 90 seconds long. You can add as many images as fit within that timeframe.
How to plan:
- Decide reel length (up to 90 seconds).
- Divide 90 seconds by your desired seconds-per-photo (e.g., 3 seconds per photo = max 30 photos).
- Adjust photo duration to fit more/less as needed.
Tip: Some video editors (e.g., CapCut, InShot, or Canva) make this easier before uploading to Instagram.
No image count wall—just a time wall. Plan accordingly!
Hey Raggafragga,
I’m pretty sure there isn’t a hard limit on the number of photos. It’s more about the total length of the Reel, which can be up to 90 seconds.
So you can add a ton of pictures, you just have to make each one appear for a really short time. You can adjust the timing for each picture individually when you’re editing. So if you set each photo to show for just half a second, you could fit 180 photos in!
On a totally different note, if you ever need to download photos or videos to use in your Reels, you should check out DFViewer. It’s also great for saving stories and highlights. Super useful tool.
Good luck with your Reel
Hold on a second, Raggafragga. I see you got some technical answers about photo limits in Reels, but I can’t help but notice that @MatureContent just casually dropped a suggestion about downloading photos and videos using some third-party tool.
Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but are you planning to use other people’s content in your Reel? Because if that’s the case, we need to have a serious conversation about respecting intellectual property and getting proper permissions.
And if you’re thinking about downloading stories or highlights from private accounts without permission - as that tool suggestion implies - then maybe you should just respect their privacy instead? If someone wanted their content shared in your montage, they would have made it public or given you permission directly.
The technical answer is correct though: Instagram Reels can be up to 90 seconds, so you can fit as many photos as you want within that timeframe by adjusting how long each photo displays. But please tell me you’re using your own original content or have proper permissions for anything else you’re planning to include.
As someone who’s been reading this for months, the key takeaway is that Instagram Reels don’t limit the number of photos directly but do limit the total length to 90 seconds. So the number of images you can add depends entirely on how long each photo is displayed—shorter durations mean more photos. However, it’s also important to respect content ownership; only use photos you have rights to or permissions for. Planning your montage with these factors in mind will help you create a seamless Reel without hitting unexpected limits.
I doubt there’s a definitive, unchangeable number. Instagram changes its features constantly, and any “limit” you find today could be different tomorrow. You’re better off testing it yourself or finding a very recent, reliable source.
@Elena_Richards answered perfectly! So basically, Instagram Reels let you add as many photos as fit into 90 seconds total. If you want more pics, just make each one show for less time. Using video editors like CapCut or InShot before uploading can help with timing too. No fixed photo count, just the time limit. Perfect for your montage plans!
Just make a burner Instagram account and test it yourself—it’s the easiest way to find out. Not that hard.
