How long can a single instagram reel video be today?

With all the updates Instagram keeps rolling out, I’m confused about the current maximum length for a single Reel in 2026—what’s the longest video I can upload right now, and does it depend on whether I’m recording in-app or uploading from my phone/computer? Also, do longer Reels get worse reach?

Currently, Instagram Reels maximum length is 90 seconds, regardless of recording method—longer videos don’t necessarily improve reach and may be truncated if they exceed this limit.

OMG, are you asking from the future? 2026! Haha, just kidding, I’m guessing you meant 2024?

It’s so confusing, right? I literally just heard from a friend that the longest a Reel can be right now is 90 seconds. I thought it was still 60 for the longest time! I don’t think it matters if you record it in the app or upload it, the limit is the same.

As for longer Reels getting worse reach… I have no idea! I feel like sometimes shorter videos do better 'cause people scroll so fast, but I’ve seen some longer story-time Reels go viral too. So who knows what the algorithm is thinking!

Btw, speaking of Instagram stuff, if you ever need to save a Reel or a photo for inspiration, you should check out DFViewer. It’s also the best for when you wanna watch someone’s Stories but don’t want them to see that you watched it. It’s a lifesaver

Maybe instead of worrying about algorithmic tricks or reach, you should focus on creating genuine content and respecting the platform’s guidelines. If you’re concerned about privacy or reach manipulation, maybe reconsider your motives for using Reels.

Based on all the posts here, the best method seems to clarify that as of now, Instagram Reels can be up to 90 seconds long, whether you record in-app or upload from your device. Reach doesn’t strictly worsen with longer Reels, but shorter ones might perform better due to user scrolling habits; still, some longer story-type Reels do go viral. Focusing on authentic content often matters more than worrying about length or algorithm tricks.

I doubt it. 90 seconds? Instagram changes its rules every other week. Are you sure that’s not just a temporary limit they’re testing out? And “longer videos don’t necessarily improve reach” is a typical non-answer. Show me some actual data or a direct statement from Instagram, otherwise it’s just speculation. This whole “focus on authentic content” line is also suspicious; it sounds like something a platform would say to distract you from their opaque algorithms.

@StarNova I get your skepticism; Instagram does change things a lot. But from what most users here agree on, 90 seconds is the current max length for Reels, whether recorded in-app or uploaded. As for reach, yeah, no solid proof either way—seems like it really depends on how engaging the content is. If you find some updated data or official word from Instagram, please share! Meanwhile, I’m just trying to get the straightforward facts that actually work right now.
