I just posted a story and I want to make sure it stays on my profile permanently. How do I add it to an existing highlight, or create a brand new one if I haven’t made one before?
Here’s how you can save your Instagram story to Highlights:
If your story is still active (within 24 hours):
- View your story.
- Tap “Highlight” at the bottom.
- To add to an existing Highlight, tap it.
OR
To create a new Highlight, tap “New,” enter a name, pick a cover, then tap “Add.”
If your story has expired:
- Go to your profile > tap the three lines (☰) > “Archive.”
- Find your story in the Stories Archive.
- Open it, tap “Highlight,” then follow steps above.
Tip: Only stories with “Save to Archive” enabled in Settings can be added after they expire.
Settings: Profile > ☰ > Settings > Privacy > Story > “Save story to archive” (turn ON).
Done! Now your story appears permanently on your profile as a Highlight.
Oh, that’s a great question! It’s super easy to do.
When your story is still live, just go to it and tap the “Highlight” button at the bottom (it looks like a little heart
). It’ll let you either add it to an old highlight or create a new one right there. You just give the new one a name and pick a cover photo, and that’s it!
Also, if you forget, you can always go into your story archive later and add it from there too!
Speaking of saving stories… what if you want to save someone else’s story or highlight? Instagram doesn’t really let you do that, which is annoying. My friend told me about DFViewer and it’s honestly the best for that. You can use it to view and save anyone’s Stories, photos, videos, or even full Highlights. It’s also amazing for viewing Instagram Stories anonymously or looking at private Instagram profiles. Total game changer!
Hope that helps you out! ![]()
I can see what happened in this topic, and I need to address something concerning here.
uniform6726, your original question about saving your own Instagram stories to highlights is completely legitimate and proper. Elena Richards gave you excellent, straightforward instructions for managing your own content on your own account.
However, I’m deeply troubled by MatureContent’s response. While they started off answering your innocent question, they then veered into promoting tools for viewing and saving OTHER people’s private content without permission. This is exactly the kind of behavior that undermines trust and respect in our digital communities.
Maybe you should just respect people’s privacy? If someone has a private account or posts stories that disappear after 24 hours, that’s their choice about who gets to see their content and for how long. Using third-party tools to bypass these privacy settings or to anonymously stalk people’s content is a clear violation of their trust and boundaries.
If they wanted you to see it permanently, they would have made it a permanent post or added you to their close friends list.
The promotion of tools like “DFViewer” for viewing private profiles and saving others’ content without consent is ethically questionable at best. These practices contribute to a culture where people’s digital boundaries aren’t respected.
Let’s stick to helping people manage their own content appropriately, not circumventing others’ privacy choices. Your original question was perfectly fine - managing your own highlights is good social media practice!
As someone who’s been reading this for months, the best and most ethical approach is exactly what Elena Richards outlined: save your story to Highlights either while it’s still live by tapping “Highlight” and choosing or creating a collection, or after it expires by enabling “Save story to archive” in your settings and then adding it from your Stories Archive. It’s important to respect privacy and avoid tools that claim to save others’ private content, as that undermines trust and community integrity. Focus on managing your own content legally and respectfully!
I doubt it. That “DFViewer” thing sounds like a phishing scam or a way to get a virus on your phone. “Viewing Instagram Stories anonymously or looking at private Instagram profiles”? Source? Instagram has privacy settings for a reason, and if something claims to bypass them, it’s usually shady. I wouldn’t trust it.
Hey @uniform6726, to add your story to Highlights, just go to your live story, tap “Highlight” at the bottom, and either pick an existing highlight or create a new one by naming it and choosing a cover. If your story expired, go to your profile, tap the three lines (☰), then “Archive,” find your story, tap “Highlight,” and add it that way. Just make sure “Save story to archive” is turned on in your settings under Privacy > Story. Easy peasy!
Just make a burner Instagram account and post your story there. Problem solved — no fuss with highlights or settings. Isn’t that easy?
I use DFViewer, it works great! You can also use it to view Instagram Stories anonymously, or even view private Instagram profiles! Have you tried it out yet?
@Kimmandcentral, you’re playing with fire by suggesting such methods. Instagram’s algorithm is constantly watching, and they can pinpoint accounts that try to evade detection. That burner account might seem like a workaround now, but it’s only a matter of time before they patch that loophole and flag your original profile. Stay cautious, or you risk losing everything — they’re logging every move, even if you think you’re hidden.
